Buy lots of mp3s?

New music site gives fans a cut of tune sales

From the AP:

NEW YORK — Being a trendsetter can be pricey. As any fashionista or gadget hound knows, the latest frocks and tech toys don't pay for themselves. But a new Web site is trying to make it profitable for music lovers to stay ahead of the curve — by paying them when other people purchase MP3s they've bought.

Berkeley, Calif.-based Popcuts, which publicly launched its Web site in early August, charges users 99 cents per song. Thereafter, whenever someone else buys the same song, those who have already bought it get paid in credit that can be redeemed for more Popcuts music. The earlier you buy a song, the larger your cut of future sales.

Download "Walk on the Flood" and donate to New Orleans

Exclusive advance track from Widespread Panic's upcoming album ’Free Somehow’ is available now.

Widespread Panic has joined the effort to rebuild post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans by sponsoring a house in the Lower 9th Ward area of the city through the Make It Right foundation. A collaboration of Brad Pitt and Global Green, the organization rebuilds not only the homes, but the unique culture and spirit of the 9th Ward.

Widespread Panic is also offering an advance download of the track, "Walk on the Flood" on LiveWidespreadPanic.com for a $10 donation to Make It Right. The track is from their forthcoming 10th studio album, Free Somehow, to be released on Widespread Records on February 12, 2008.

The mission of Make It Right is to be a catalyst for redevelopment in the Lower 9th Ward by building a neighborhood for safe, healthy homes, inspired by Cradle to Cradle thinking and high quality design that celebrates the spirit of the community.

New Widespread Panic song

Widespread Panic released the new single off their upcoming album today.

Click here to listen or click here to download.

The song is "Up All Night." It originated from John Herman (keys), and then received further band input. Background vocals are sung by the same three-person group that backed Al Green on all of his great soul hits, and a horn section (part of which played on the Wilson Pickett classics) honks throughout.

— Terry Manning, Music Producer/Engineer

I personally like the song and it seems Panic took a different direction with this one. I had heard the song played by John Hermann solo before hearing this one. You can tell it has been added upon significantly and polished since it was first played. It has a Motown feel to it. Panic has been down that road before and it doesn't seem that they will shy away from that type sound anytime soon. I'm eager to hear the entire album. This may be the only song on there that has seen the light of day. It is supposed to be all new material, not road tested. The album should be in stores some time in November.

John Bell, vocals/guitar/and apparently the jug/, in the studio working on the new album.

Southern Shelter

I just stumbled across this blog. Appears to consist of mp3s from performances and bands in Athens, Ga. As most of you know, Athens has been a hotbed of great music from Widespread Panic, R.E.M., Vic Chesnutt, B-52s, The Indigo Girls and countless others.

Online music

In my inaugural post I would like to share with you all some of the best sites out there for streaming music. Most of these sites allow you to download songs in mp3 format and some offer flac.

Pandora.com: One of my favorite Web sites. Pandora allows you to build stations according to a certain band or song that you like. Once you have created the station it will play music of the band you have chosen as well as songs that are similar. It's a good way to be exposed to bands you may have never heard of that have similar musical qualities. As far as I can tell there is no limit on the number of stations you can create.

Wolfgang's Vault: This is a site dedicated to live concerts from various archives. Here you can stream shows for free and pay to download them. A little something here for everybody.

Archive.org: According to the site, "The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public." This site has got an enormous live music database. Just like Disney World, don't try to take in all of it in one day.

Garageband.com: Great place to find music that is flying under the radar. Lots of mp3s from all genres to stream or download.

Panicstream.com: Originally designed as a streaming site for live Widespread Panic shows, Panicstream has a non-Panic section that boasts over 400 concerts currently streaming and over 400 Widespread Panic shows. The webmaster adds Widespread Panic and other band's live concerts on a regular basis.
